The third longest river in Scotland, the Clyde is the backbone of Glasgow's economic and educational development. In the 19th century, the city undertook the huge task of dredging the river to accommodate the larger steamships of the day. By 1880 the river was fully navigable, and shortly after Glasgow became one of the United Kingdom's largest ship-building centres.
